◆ Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before stepping onto a German dancefloor.
What is the legal drinking and clubbing age in Germany?
+
In Germany, you can enter most clubs at 18. Some venues allow entry at 16 with parental consent or for specific events. Beer and wine can be purchased at 16; spirits require you to be 18. Most of the clubs we feature are strictly 18+. Always carry a valid photo ID — German clubs take age verification seriously.
Is there a dress code for German nightclubs?
+
It depends on the venue. Berlin clubs like Berghain and Sisyphos favor dark, understated clothing — think black jeans, comfortable shoes, minimal branding. Avoid flashy designer labels, high heels, or anything that screams "tourist." Cologne's Bootshaus is more relaxed — trainers and casual wear are perfectly fine. When in doubt, dress in dark, comfortable clothes and avoid stag-party attire.
How does the door policy work at Berghain?
+
Berghain's door policy is famously strict and opaque. There's no guaranteed entry, regardless of who you are. General tips: go in small groups (1–2 people), dress in black, don't be visibly intoxicated, stay calm and confident at the door, and don't take photos in the queue. Speak German or be brief in English. The bouncers' decision is final — arguing will only get you remembered (and not in a good way). Sunday morning tends to be slightly easier than Saturday night.
Can I take photos or videos inside clubs?
+
In most Berlin clubs — absolutely not. Berghain famously puts stickers over phone cameras at entry. Sisyphos, Tresor, and Watergate all discourage phone use on the dancefloor. Cologne's clubs are slightly more lenient, but using your phone extensively will still earn you dirty looks. The ethos is simple: be present, not performative. Leave the content creation for after you leave.
What time do German clubs open and close?
+
German club culture runs late. Most venues open between 23:00 and midnight on Friday/Saturday. The peak hours are typically 2:00–5:00 AM. In Berlin, many clubs (Berghain, Sisyphos, Tresor) don't close at all on weekends — they run continuously from Friday/Saturday night through Sunday or even Monday. Showing up before midnight can feel empty; arriving at 2–3 AM is normal. For the full experience, pace yourself.
How much does entry typically cost?
+
Cover charges vary by venue and event. Berlin clubs typically charge between €10–20 at the door. Bootshaus in Cologne ranges from €15–25, depending on the headliner. Some clubs offer advance tickets through Resident Advisor or their own websites, which can guarantee entry (bypassing the door policy in some cases). Cash is still preferred at many Berlin venues, though card acceptance is improving.
Is German nightlife safe?
+
Generally, yes. German clubs take safety seriously. Most venues have professional security, awareness teams, and zero-tolerance policies for harassment. Berlin in particular has a strong culture of mutual respect on the dancefloor. That said, standard nightlife precautions apply: watch your drinks, travel with trusted friends, keep valuables secure, and be aware of your surroundings. If you feel unsafe, find security or awareness team members immediately.
Do I need to speak German to go clubbing?
+
Not necessarily, but it helps. Berlin's club scene is extremely international — English is widely spoken and understood. However, at the door of some venues (especially Berghain), greeting the bouncer in German ("Hallo, eine Person bitte" / "Hi, one person please") can signal that you respect the local culture. In Cologne and Hamburg, English is equally well received. On the dancefloor itself, music is the only language that matters.
